Movie review: Vishwaroopam is a gripping spy thriller

Kamal Haasan’s latest film Vishwaroopam is a solid action thriller set in the backdrop of terrorism, but it also leaves you gasping for more action, more drama and more depth.

Kamal Haasan makes a swashbuckling comeback with Vishwaroopam which is his first directorial venture in almost nine years. A lot has changed over the years for Kamal Haasan in terms of the themes he has chosen for his films and with Vishwaroopam, he’s one step closer to making a truly global film. Vishwaroopam is set in the backdrop of terrorism where a group of Al-Qaeda terrorists plan to blow up a bomb right in the middle of New York City and it all boils down to Vishwanath, played by Kamal Haasan, and his friends to stop the impending disaster.

Vishwanath lives in New York City along with his wife Dr.Nirupama (Pooja Kumar). Although Nirupama has no complaints about her husband, they are in a marriage of convenience and at one point she begins suspecting him. Vishwanath is a Kathak dance teacher and when a private detective, sent by Nirupama, begins following him, he uncovers a secret about Vishwanath which causes major repercussions and all hell breaks loose when Nirupama finds out that the real identity of Vishwanath and his friends is not what it seems to be. Meanwhile, Omar (Rahul Bose) comes to New York on a special mission and he’s shocked to know that Vishwanath is still alive. What’s the connection between the two? And how does Vishwanath and his friends stop Omar? That forms the rest of this gripping spy thriller.

First things first, Vishwaroopam feels a tad incomplete since Kamal Haasan has decided to keep the major twists in the subplot for the sequel. We never truly understand what transpired between Omar and Vishwanath. We are shown just glimpses of Vishwanath’s past when he meets Omar and how he becomes one among them, but the film doesn’t really capture anything which we haven’t seen before in all those scores of Hollywood films based on the same theme; however, there’s no denying that Kamal Haasan indeed has a great eye for detail. A majority of the film is set in Afghanistan and it gives an insight into the training camps of Al-Qaeda, the atrocities committed by the Taliban, the lives of women and children who are among the worst hit in the ongoing war, the poppy fields which are a major source of income for the terrorists, the families which live under fear and most importantly, the American troops who are so blinded by the war and their hunt for Osama Bin Laden and other top Al-Qaeda leaders that they end up killing innocent civilians. Things like these are precisely what make Vishwaroopam so gripping despite its long runtime. Vishwaroopam is indeed Kamal Haasan’s tour de force.

Unlike most of his earlier films, the narrative style takes centrestage more. That’s one reason why it’s so difficult to point out who stands out the most in terms of performance. Almost everyone in the film including Kamal Haasan, Pooja, Andrea and Sekhar Kapur do exactly what they are expected to, but Rahul Bose is the icing on the cake with his menacing performance as Omar. Most part of the film is narrated through intermittent flashbacks but Kamal Haasan never reveals his cards. After a point, the real identity of Kamal Haasan is revealed and it hardly comes as a big surprise, but at the same time Vishwaroopam is not the typical action entertainer which resorts to shock value.

Sanu Varghese’s cinematographer is stunning throughout the film and his work is among the best in recent years. Whether it’s the hills of Afghanistan or a gloomy setting in New York City, almost every frame comes alive, thanks to Sanu Varghese’s attention for detail. Mahesh Narayanan, the editor, has had to pack in too many details for a film which travels back and forth in time. Although it’s not really an aberration, one would have wished that the film wasn’t as long as it was considering that it has a sequel as well. Music by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy is alright.

There’s absolutely nothing in Vishwaroopam which would enrage anyone and surprisingly the violence isn’t as gory as it could have been. The biggest achievement for Vishwaroopam is that for most part, it makes you forget that you are watching a Telugu (or a Tamil) film. So, has Kamal Haasan made a truly spectacular action film? The answer would be a thumping yes. Is it worth the hype? Yes. Is it a truly fulfilling experience? No. It leaves you gasping for more action, more drama and more depth and if the glimpse of the sequel is anything to go by we are in for a bigger treat soon. For now, go watch Vishwaroopam. It doesn’t tell you things which you haven’t heard or seen before, but we couldn’t be happier watching Kamal Haasan unspool reel after reel of top notch filmmaking. Two thumbs up.

7 வருடங்களாக கமல் மனதிலே ,கொஞ்சம் கொஞ்சமாக செதுக்கப்பட்ட கதை ,அதிக பொருட்செலவில் எடுக்கப்பட்டது ,DTH அறிமுகம்,இஸ்லாமிய அமைப்புகளின் எதிர்ப்பு ,தமிழகத்தில் வெளியிட தடை, படம் குறித்த எதிர்பார்ப்புகளை எகிறச் செய்ததது .

எதிர்பார்ப்பை நிறைவேற்றியதா என்றால் ,கண்டிப்பாக ,ஓரளவுக்கு நிறைவேற்றியது எனச் சொல்லலாம். கமல் என்ற கலைஞனின் உழைப்பு, ஒவ்வொரு காட்சியிலும் தெரிகிறது.

80களில், ராக்கெட்தொழில் நுட்பத்தை காட்டிய விக்ரம் , DTS அறிமுகம் செய்த குருதிப்புனல்,DTHஐ அறிமுகம் செய்ய எடுத்த முயற்சிகள்.இருவேறு கோணங்களில் கதை சொன்ன சண்டியர்(விருமாண்டி) இப்படி சொல்லிக் கொண்டே போகலாம்.களத்தூர் கண்ணமாவில் துவங்கிய தேடல் ,இன்று விஸ்வரூபம் எடுத்துள்ளது.

"கதக்" மாஸ்டராக பெண்மை போன்ற நளினம் கொண்ட கமலை,அவரது மனைவி சந்தேகம் கொண்டு,டிடெக்டிவ் அமைத்து துப்பறிய,கமல் யார் என்ற கேள்வியும், அவரை பற்றிய மர்ம முடிச்சுகளும்தான் மொத்த படமும் .படத்தின் சுவராஜ்யம் போய் விடும் என்பதால் இதற்குமேல் கதை சொல்வதில்லை.

இஸ்லாமிய நண்பர்கள் மனம் புண்படும் காட்சிகள் ஒன்றும் இல்லை .எந்த வித காம்ப்ரமைசும் செய்யாமல்,அல்கொய்தா நெட்வொர்க் பற்றி,ஆய்வு செய்து திரைக்கதை அமைத்துள்ளார். கண்டிப்பாக கதைக்களமும் , காட்சி அமைப்புகளும் தமிழ் சினிமாவிற்கு புதிது .கதையில் ஒவ்வொரு சஸ்பென்சும்,மாட்ரிக்ஸ் பாணியில் வெளிப்படும் காட்சியில் இயக்குனர் கமல் தெரிகிறார்.ஆப்கான் காட்சிகளில் வரும் கமலும், அவரது மேக்கப்பும் அட்டகாசம்.தசாவதாரத்தில் தெரிந்த செயற்கைத்தனம் இல்லை.

பூஜாகுமார் ,அவர் கள்ளக்காதலனுடன் தோன்றும் காட்சிகளில், அவ்வளவு அழகாகா தெரிகிறார். ஹிஹி . ஆண்ரியா எதற்கு வருகிறார் என்பதை புரிந்து கொள்ள முடியவில்லை.புரிஞ்சிடுச்சு புரிஞ்சிடுச்சு ..ஒரு காட்சியில் குண்டடிபட்ட ,கமலுக்கு தையல் போட்டு விடுகிறார்.இதற்க்கு ஒரு நர்ஸே போதுமே?

ஒரு குறிப்பிட்டவர்களை தீவிரவாதிகளாக காட்டி ,எதிர்ப்புகளை சமாளிக்க ,இந்துவுக்கு ஒரு முஸ்லீம் நண்பரோ /vice versa இருப்பது போன்று காட்சி அமைப்பது , தமிழ்சினிமாவின் தொன்றுதொட்டு வரும் பாரம்பரியம் .அதுபோன்ற காட்சிகளை கமல் தவிர்த்திருக்கிறார் .மணிரத்னம் பாம்பேயில் கூட, நாசரை இந்துவாகவும் ,கிட்டியை முஸ்லிமாகவும் காட்டியிருப்பார்.

ஆப்கான் காட்சிகளில் ஒளிப்பதிவு அபாரம். குரிதிப்புனலை போல பாடல்களை தவிர்த்திருந்தால்,இன்னும் விறுவிறுப்பு கூடியிருக்கும்.ஆப்கான் காட்சிகளை கொஞ்சம் குறைத்திருக்கலாம்.டாகுமெண்டரி பார்ப்பது போன்ற உணர்வு ஏற்படுவதை தவிர்க்க முடியவில்லை.கமல் பாணியில் சொல்ல வேண்டுமானால், கொஞ்சம் மொக்கை ,அதிகம் சூப்பர், இரண்டும் சேர்ந்த கலவை இது. AR ரகுமான் பாட்ட கேட்டவுடனும் ,கமல் சார் படத்த பார்த்தவுடனே புரியாது .பார்க்க பார்க்கத் தான் பிடிக்கும் .இந்த படமும் அப்படித்தான்.

முதல் முதல் பார்த்தவுடம் புரியாது .புரியனுமுன்னா இரண்டு முறை பார்க்கணும்.

மிகப்பெரிய வெற்றி பெறாது.

இந்த படத்தில் நடித்த நாசர் ,விஸ்வரூபம் படத்தை பார்த்து, அதற்க்கு யு/ஏ சான்றிதழ் கொடுத்த,

ஹாசன் முகமது ஜின்னா, இருவரும் முஸ்லிம்கள்தான்.தன் மதத்தை தவறாக சித்தரித்திருந்தால் எதிர்ப்பு தெரிவித்து இருக்க மாட்டார்களா என்ன ?
