KOLKATA: Direct-to-home TV services provider Dish TV has embarked on a content strategy that differentiates its services from competitors.

Dish TV today launched a brand called Zing for targeting regional markets where Phase III and Phase IV digitisation has opened up significant opportunity.

The DTH TV provider would also soon launch Dish Box Office, an expanded movie-on-demand service.

Starting with West Bengal, the DTH TV provider will start offering Zing in Odisha later this week and subsequently extend it to Gujarat and Maharashtra.

Zing is part of Dish TV’s strategy to search for newer ways of reaching out to specific viewers and engaging with them through relatable content. With Zing, a customer in West Bengal will be able to choose from a number of packs which will include all available Bangla channels.

The Zing packages are priced at Rs 175, Rs 249 and Rs 349. The company plans to spend Rs 7 crore on a 360 degree brand awareness and marketing campaign.

“With more than 10 to 12 million analogue television homes in West Bengal to be digitised in phase III and IV, we would like to grow our business here,” said Dish TV CEO R C Venkateish.

“Besides the content, all above-the-line (ATL) and below-the-line (BTL) advertising, packaging and other marketing activities will be available in Bangla,” said Dish TV India COO Salil Kapoor.

As part of Dish Box Office, Dish TV would offer half-a-dozen movies through the day instead of just one movie on demand now. “As the reach of this offering is comparable to any movie channel, we hope to reach at least 50 per cent of our active subscriber base,” Kapoor said.

Talking about phase 1 digitisation in Kolkata, Kapoor said DTH has a market share of around 30 per cent, of which Dish TV’s share of around 28 per cent. Dish TV has a subscriber base of around 11.8 million in India.

Direct to home service provider Videocon d2h is likely to go ahead with its proposed public float (IPO) plan this financial year, according to a top company official.

The company had received the permission from market regulator Sebi in March 2013 for its proposed Rs. 700-crore IPO but did not launch the same due to bad market conditions.

"We are engaged with our advisors and investment bankers. We have appointed Axis Capital among others to advise us on the same. We are planning the IPO this financial year itself," Videocon director Saurabh Dhoot told PTI in Mumbai on Thursday.

The satellite TV arm of the diversified Videocon group on Thursday formally announced the change of its name from Bharat Business Channel to Videocon d2h. Dhoot said the rechristening will not have any impact on the IPO.

The company also unveiled its 4K ultra high definition services which it will roll out over next three quarters, he said. The company expects an uptick in the sales of 4K or UHD panels in the festive season and it would be targeting its existing customer base.

"It would begin with important sports events which would be enabled by the 4K feed. So we are well prepared to launch that service for our customers. Then we would have movies and general entertainment," he said.

The company caters to 11 million customers and has been growing at 40 percent CAGR, Dhoot said. Company chief executive Anil Khera said it would be a premium service and the 4K Ultra HD box would cost Rs. 10,000.

The conversion of an additional transponder has given additional capacity for Dialog TV to add a few extra channels. However more capacity will be available if and when Dialog TV converts the other 3 MPEG2 transponders too, this is not expected any time soon considering the time taken to convert just one.

SES-8 is co-located with NSS-6 at 95 deg East, and which is already covering the Indian sub-Continent with signals. Dish TV CEO RC Venkateish is on record as saying that Dish TV was looking to add five transponders from SES to boost its existing capacity.

This new scheme is reported to be a j-v between Dish and SatNet Pvt Ltd in which Dish holds a 70 per cent stake. SatNet was formerly Star TV Lanka and is the first DTH pay-TV operating in Sri Lanka.

The DTH transmissions will use Conax encryption. SatNet is the authorised agent for Dish TV.

MUMBAI: Dish TV is readying to launch its direct-to-home (DTH) service in Sri Lanka soon via a joint venture company. Dish TV has expressed intent to invest Rs 100 crore (Rs 1 billion) in Dish TV Lanka (Private) Ltd, a joint venture it floated in Sri Lanka with Satnet Pvt Ltd. Dish TV holds 70 per cent stake in the JV while the rest is held by local partner Satnet. Dish TV board has approved an additional funding of Rs 30 crore (Rs 300 million) for its joint venture in Sri Lanka. Earlier, Dish TV had planned to invest Rs 70 crore (Rs 700 million) in Satnet. “This is just an enabling resolution. In case we need more funds in future, we will have it ready,” Dish TV CEO RC Venkateish said. Dish TV’s board has approved “making loans / investments or giving guarantee or providing any security under Section 372A and other applicable provisions of the Companies Act, 1956 and the notified provisions of the Companies Act 2013, for an additional amount of Rs 30 crore only”. The aggregate investment amount in Dish TV Lanka will not exceed Rs 100 crore (Rs 1 billion), Dish TV said. Sources said Dish TV will have a dedicated transponder on SES’ new satellite for the Sri Lanka DTH service. Dish TV will use the same encryption and set-top box vendors for the Sri Lankan operations. Conax will be the content protection provider. Dish TV Lanka was incorporated on 25 April last year and Satnet owns a DTH licence in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka has a better DTH ARPU (average revenue per user) than India. Dish TV’s ARPU for the fiscal third-quarter ended 31 December 2013 stood at Rs 166. For Sri Lankan DTH player Dialog TV, it is $9. With over 264,000 subscribers, Dialog TV, a subsidiary of telecom major Dialog Axiata, dominates the Sri Lankan pay TV market.

FRANCE 24 has concluded a new distribution agreement in India and will be available on free-to-air Direct-To-Home service (DTH) DD DIRECT +. Owned by public broadcaster Prasar Bharati, the platform will begin broadcasting FRANCE 24 English version on November 1st.

Thanks to this agreement, FRANCE 24 will also be available on DISH TV basic offer, the n°1 private satellite operator in the country.

Thanks to this new agreement, which represents the most important deployment for the channel on the Asian market, FRANCE 24 will now be available 24/7 to 31 million additional households across the country.
