Set-top box turns cyclone warning system

CHENNAI: Now meteorologists needn't worry about not being able to make crucial announcements during a storm when power supply is cut off. The new cyclone warning dissemination system (CWDS) is being upgraded. It will work on direct-to-home (DTH) based equipment and can function for at least three days without needing to be charged.

The upgraded CWDS is a set-top box, which is commonly found in houses, modified by attaching an audio system to it. "We will be able to make announcements and receive audio signals through it," said G Gopal, a met department official. The modified set-top box would also have a battery back-up that can work on 12 volts, he said. "It will have two such batteries that ensure that it functions for 72 hours without requiring power," said Gopal.

The system developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) ensures that the DTH receiver gets only satellite signals and warnings from the local met department office, and works on a new bandwidth called ku-band. "The older receivers used to work on F band and X band — one to transmit signals and the other to receive," said Gopal.

The meteorological department decided to update the CWDS, which was earlier working on custom-made receivers, with the DTH system which is a commercially available product. "Replacing of parts and servicing of a DTH receiver will be cheaper and easier," said Gopal. The older receivers and system had been made way back in 1984 by ISRO, said officials.

The warning systems are being upgraded across the country. The met department has installed warning dissemination systems at the Chennai collectorate, secretariat, Ripon Buildings, seat of the city corporation, and Ezhilagam. There are 59 such systems across the state. The installation of the upgraded system in Ripon Buildings is underway and is likely to be completed by Friday. The system is being installed in the building's Golden Jubilee Hall.

Met department officials say the system has been installed in crucial government offices where authorities have to make a decision on the necessary action to be taken during an emergency.

Vetrimaran who is producing the film jointly with Dayanidhi Azhagiri has tweeted, “Udhayam NH4 is a simple film written and made around youngsters and meant to just entertain. View the film without any expectation. Intensive promotional activities for Udhayam NH4 starts from now.”

Telecom Lead Asia: Anil Ambani-owned Reliance Communications is in talks with South-based Sun Group to sell its DTH business for an estimated Rs 2,000 crore.

Reliance Communications is the second Indian telecom operator, which is facing tough competition due to the ongoing digitization move, to decide to exit from the DTH business.

Bharti Airtel, India’s #1 telecom operator, is in talks with Liberty Global and a couple of private equity firms to sell 25 percent stake in its direct-to-home (DTH) business. Both are trying to exit from satellite business due to financial issues.

Reliance Communications is trying to exit from DTH after running the business for 5 years. Reliance Communications launched satellite TV services on 19 August, 2008 and Reliance Digital TV now offers a Standard Definition, High Definition & High Definition-DVR STBs, along with largest channel bouquet.

The main aim of Reliance Communications is to reduce debt, estimated at Rs 37,000 crore.

Reliance Digital TV is available at more than 37,600 outlets across 8,350 towns in the country.

Though a report in Times of India on Monday mentioned about a possible deal with Sun Group, it did not give much details.

Reliance Digital TV currently has 4.6 million subscribers, with 9 percent share of the DTH market in India. Sun Direct has 8.5 million DTH subscribers. Sun Direct claims that it is also the only DTH player to offer 11 exclusive regional channels and services.

Reliance Communications’ DTH business has several firsts to showcase. It launched India’s first High definition cum Advanced Digital Video recorder (HD DVR), offering 200 hrs of recording, trick play functions & universal remote for operating three devices.

The company claims that its Set Top Box (STB) Failure Rate has gone down to 0.61 percent, which is amongst the best internationally and by far the best in India.

The (DTH) industry in India currently has about 30 million subscribers from six DTH operators Dish TV, Airtel Digital TV, Tata Sky, Sun Direct, Reliance Digital TV, Videocon D2H and DD Direct.

The Indian DTH industry is poised to grow to 60 million subscribers by the end of 2013.

According to Media Partners Asia’s (MPA) annual research report, the DTH subscriber base in India will grow from 2.3 crore in 2010 to 6.4 crore by 2015, and 8.3 crore by 2020. The US is expected to be the second largest DTH market with 3.5 crore active subscribers.

The Indian cable TV industry’s total subscription revenue is estimated to grow to $6.4 billion by 2020 from $4.2 billion in 2011, according to Media Partners Asia.

Kamal Haasan met the press today morning at his Eldams Road office in Chennai. He really turned emotional as he said that he had pledged all his property including his house to get funds for the making of Vishwaroopam, which has apparently been made on a budget of close to 95 crores. If the movie fails to release soon, he may be forced to forego the house as the money lenders have already been pressurizing him for the past two months.

He said that he may be led into leaving the country as he wishes to be a secular man. He didn’t blame any particular religion but hinted that he was fed up at being played around in a dirty political game.

On a sad note he said that he didn’t know if he would be able to hold another press meet at this house if the court ruling goes against his movie today. He also wondered how his movie can make a mockery of the country’s unity.

The Madras High Court is set to hear the Tamil Nadu Government’s appeal against the court’s interim relief to Vishwaroopam at 2 15 pm today.
