Reliance Big Distribution Deal With Airtel Digital TV

MUMBAI: It's worked its magic. Big Magic, the general entertainment channel (GEC) for the core Hindi heartland of Uttar Pradesh (UP), Madhya Pradesh (MP), Bihar and Jharkhand – from the stable of Reliance Broadcast Network Ltd (RBNL) has signed a distribution deal with Airtel Digital TV, the DTH service arm of the leading telecom operator Bharti Airtel.

Airtel Digital has 375 channels and services including 17 HD channels and six interactive services. With this strategic agreement, Big Magic will now have access to the 8.1 million customer base that Airtel boasts of (as on March 2013).

RBNL's carriage deal with Airtel for Big Magic, makes it the second Indian DTH operator to carry the channel, apart from Reliance Digtial TV.  Viewers can now tune into Big Magic on their Airtel Digital TV on channel no 631 from today. The channel airs a mix of locally relevant entertainment, including drama, crime, socio-mytho, game shows and talent shows.


Says RBNL CEO Tarun Katyal: “As a broadcaster, we’d like to reach maximum audience and we are glad to be associated with Airtel.”

Adds a media observer: "The deal is significant as Airtel has a sizable subscriber base in the markets that Big Magic is targeting. The expectation obviously is that the extra audience will lead to extra advertising revenues."

CHENNAI: Now meteorologists needn't worry about not being able to make crucial announcements during a storm when power supply is cut off. The new cyclone warning dissemination system (CWDS) is being upgraded. It will work on direct-to-home (DTH) based equipment and can function for at least three days without needing to be charged.

The upgraded CWDS is a set-top box, which is commonly found in houses, modified by attaching an audio system to it. "We will be able to make announcements and receive audio signals through it," said G Gopal, a met department official. The modified set-top box would also have a battery back-up that can work on 12 volts, he said. "It will have two such batteries that ensure that it functions for 72 hours without requiring power," said Gopal.

The system developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) ensures that the DTH receiver gets only satellite signals and warnings from the local met department office, and works on a new bandwidth called ku-band. "The older receivers used to work on F band and X band — one to transmit signals and the other to receive," said Gopal.

The meteorological department decided to update the CWDS, which was earlier working on custom-made receivers, with the DTH system which is a commercially available product. "Replacing of parts and servicing of a DTH receiver will be cheaper and easier," said Gopal. The older receivers and system had been made way back in 1984 by ISRO, said officials.

The warning systems are being upgraded across the country. The met department has installed warning dissemination systems at the Chennai collectorate, secretariat, Ripon Buildings, seat of the city corporation, and Ezhilagam. There are 59 such systems across the state. The installation of the upgraded system in Ripon Buildings is underway and is likely to be completed by Friday. The system is being installed in the building's Golden Jubilee Hall.

Met department officials say the system has been installed in crucial government offices where authorities have to make a decision on the necessary action to be taken during an emergency.

Ad-free HBO channels to be on dth platform

HBO Asia and Eros International Media have launched their two advertising free channels HBO Defined and HBO Hits in India on the DTH platform.

This announcement came after the two companies formed a tie-up in December to launch these premium advertising free movie channels.

These channels will currently be available for preview on Dish TV and Airtel Digital TV. The channels have been priced at Rs 49 and Rs 69 in Standard Definition (SD) and High-Definition (HD), respectively.

In a statement, Jonathan Spink, CEO of HBO Asia, said: “The launch of HBO Defined and HBO Hits on Dish TV and Airtel Digital TV will reach out to a wide network of subscribers all over India. Subscribers in India will be able to enjoy a first-class cinema experience that is 100 per cent advertising free in the comfort of their own home.”

In Asia, HBO offers five subscription movie channels in SD and HD formats.

HBO Asia and Eros International Media today launched HBO Defined and HBO Hits in India with two DTH operators, Dish TV and Airtel Digital TV.

These carriage deals come shortly after the December 2012 announcement of the strategic tie-up between HBO Asia and Eros to launch two new premium advertising-free movie channels in India, a statement today said.

The channels are currently on air and will be available for a free preview in the initial phase of the launch, it added.

HBO Defined and HBO Hits will showcase Hollywood and Bollywood content through HD and SD feeds on Dish TV and SD feed on Airtel Digital TV.

These will be offered at a special introductory price of Rs 49 and Rs 69 for SD and HD services, respectively.

"The launch of HBO Defined and HBO Hits on Dish TV and Airtel Digital TV will reach out to a wide network of subscribers all over India," HBO Asia CEO Jonathan Spink said.
