India DTH consolidation plans

India DTH consolidation plans

Three major DTH operators in India’s giant pay-TV market are in talks to form a joint-venture, according to local reports. The plan is to see content and programming costs trimmed and see increased carriage fees coming from India’s broadcasters.

The three companies are: Dish TV, Videocon d2h and Airtel Digital TV, and are in discussions to set up a JV where they will each have equal stakes, according to a source familiar with the development, and reported by local press.

“We are in talks with two other DTH companies to form a JV that will work on content and carriage agreements with broadcasters. The idea is to float a combined entity with equal stakes of the three partners,” Dish TV CEO R. C. Venkateish told TelevisionPost.com.

The three combined players, if the scheme goes ahead, would command 25 million subscribers. There are, however, concerns that the plan could fall foul of the regulators. “The current system is illogical. Despite its substantial subscriber base, DTH pays more to the broadcasters while getting negligible carriage revenue. For the MSOs, carriage revenue almost covers up their content cost to broadcasters,” said Venkatiesh.

DirecTV: “We will be ready for 4K”

DirecTV’s CEO Mike White told analysts during the company’s Q3 earnings call that the broadcaster was working on the kinds of technology needed to deliver a 4K experience to its customers, but was also cautious as to its implementation. “From all those I talked to, both on the content side and on the distributor side, after the experience with 3D I think there’s a level of… I don’t want to say cautiousness, but to protect [our] options because it’s a very complex rollout that would be required.”

White explained that consumers needed “a new TV set, a different set-top box, you’ve got different compressions that you’ve got to have to deliver, you’ve got to shoot in 4K or you got have some way to up-convert. Everybody’s working on pieces of that, and I do think you will see a little bit more of it next year. But gosh, you’re still talking of very, very few homes in America that would have a TV capable of that. But we are working on it.”

He continued: “We’ve also said it’s more likely for any kind of material impact, you’re talking 2015 or 2016, to get all of these parts to come together. The content guys I talked to are being a little cautious having been burnt by 3D as well in terms of when they’re going to shoot in 4K. So I think we are, from a DirecTV standpoint, to make sure we’re going to be ready. And we’ll continue to innovate, and we hope to be there first with the best experience, the best sound and the best picture, as we always have, and that’s our commitment.”

MUMBAI: A new channel is about to enter the Sun TV-dominated GEC space of South India.

Pudhu Yugam, from the Chennai-based New Generation Media Corporation stable, is slated to go on air from 23 October. It is the second TV offering from the company after news channel Puthiya Thalaimurai TV.

Shyam Kumar has high expectations from the new channel

An internal launch has already taken place on 5 October, when the channel’s programming was unveiled to the New Generation Media Corporation. Whereas an official launch has been planned on 18 October at Chennai’s Leela Palace where everything about the baby channel will be revealed. The ad sales are being handled by Fourth Dimension Media Solutions while the media and creative duties will be handled by Mindshare Chennai and Disha Communications respectively. The channel logo will be unveiled on the day of the launch.

Nearly Rs 100 crore has been invested in the channel, which plans to air about 100 hours of in-house content per week including serials, reality and non-fiction shows, with the rest commissioned to producers. Popular Tamil film celebrities such as Simran, Sonia Agarwal and Ambika are expected to grace the shows with their presence.

New Generation Media Corporation CEO R B U Shyam Kumar couldn’t have been happier as the launch is happening before Diwali as he’d wanted.

As of now, each hour will see about seven to eight minutes of advertising. Fourth Dimension has recently opened up an office in Mumbai to attract more advertisers for the channel. “I have travelled extensively across India and the response to the channel has been terrific,” says Fourth Dimension Media Solutions CEO Shankar B.

Digitally speaking, all the shows will be available on the channel’s website plus viewers will be able to live stream them with a delay of just one or two minutes.

Plans are afoot to launch an application for Android and iOS that will be free for the first three months, post which it will be made subscription based. Viewers will be able to see live TV on the application as well.

“We tried the application with our news channel Puthiya Thalaimurai TV, and we realized people want to view us wherever they are,” says Pudhu Yugam convergence head Manikanda Boopathi. The channel will be available as a pack with PT TV for a price of Rs 250-Rs 300 per annum. Apart from that, it has also tied up with Yupptv for showing live TV and VOD.

“We know where the world is heading and we want to be ahead of everyone else,” says an optimistic Boopathy. The PT TV application has had over 80,000 downloads that gives viewers three options- live TV, just live audio (for low bandwidth) and live tickr. All this with just under four minutes of delay.

There are plans to have live streaming in HD for Tamilians in US in phase II considering Indian bandwidth is too low to allow HD on the internet.

Like in the case of Puthiya Thalaimurai, the marketing campaign will focus more on outdoor than TV. Closer to the launch, events such as flashmobs have also been planned to generate buzz

Pudhu Yugam plans a breakthrough in the GEC space by positioning itself as a General Engagement (and not Entertainment) Channel with domestic as well as foreign-based Tamil viewers as its target audience.

Only time will tell if Pudhu Yugam can give established networks like Sun and Jaya a run for their TVTs...

Dialog does it again, the sports channel Eurosports that transmits many non-cricketing action such as Tennis, Cycling, Winter Sports is being replaced by a yet unnamed channel come Friday,June 21st 2013.

The channel that will be added in favour of Eurosports is not known as yet, but it will likely be a sports channel, probably Star Sports 2, Sony Six or even worse DD Sports. Who knows it could be Ten Golf.

Eurosports is known for telecasting sports that are not usually telecast in this nation by big names such as Star & Ten.

Therefore the removal of Eurosports will be a blow for fans of cycling, tennis & winter sports. We are hoping that Dialog TV will reconsider this move.
